Moving tips from virginia to california?

I'm moving to California from Virginia for college this fall and I only have two months left before my move and I need to get things rolling. I have a car I bought a few months ago and will taking it with me in California. I will be moving from norfolk, va to san Luis obispo, ca to be exact. I'm not bringing a lot with me but some of my clothes, shoes and things like my 24 inch tv. I've received few quotes for transferring my car and they range from $900-$1300. I would normally be drawn to the $900 offer but what are the difference with prices? And how will I get my things and car transferred. Will I use UPS or FedEx or ponds? Will my car and things be safe? Right now it seems like the flight will go from $300-$400 one way. My sister will be helping me with the move. We actually thought of driving to California . But I'm worried about all the mileage that its going to put. It'll be 3000 miles. Will it be worthit? We figure we drive 12 hours a day and takes us 4-5 days. Please help me with my move and which route I should take? Drive or fly and get my things transferred. Saving Money, safety and protection of my things are the big factors. Thank you!
